Unconventional wisdom

To dream the dream of God is to be instilled with an unconventional wisdom. (9) It is a wisdom that tums the plans of this world upside down and inside out. We hold instinctively to some clear and distinct ideas about the meaning of family, wealth, honor, and religion. In conventional wisdom, the family refers to those to whom we are related by blood kinship. These are the ones we owe unconditional loyalty. In conventional wisdom, wealth is a sign of God's favor and blessing. Blessed are the rich, for they can buy whatever they want. According to conventional wisdom, honor means having status and power over others. It assigns one to the top of the social hierarchy. In conventional wisdom, religion means living a decent life according to the prevailing values. To be religious is the equivalent of being a good citizen.

The dream of God contradicts every assertion of conventional wisdom. Jesus turned the standards of this world topsyturvy. Who is your family? All those who do the will of God are your brothers and sisters, the family of disciples. What is wealth? The greatest danger of all to your spiritual wellbeing. You cannot serve God and mammon. Who are the honored ones? According to the dream of God, they are the least. The one who would be great must become the servant of all, the ones who wash dirty feet. What is true religion? Only this--to trust above all else that God is near and that God is merciful.

Yet exactly this one, the one who spread the dream of God and was crucified for bringing unconventional wisdom, is the one God raised from the dead. God vindicated the life and ministry of Jesus by raising him up to new and resurrection life. This Jesus is the one God gave us as a Living Lord to be the source of our hope in every difficult circumstance.

Worship: catching the dream of God

In a recent study of "leadership practices that form communities for mission," Shannon Jung and Russ May examined the qualities that make certain congregations vital centers of faith. The primary practice that characterizes congregations that are alive for mission is worship. (10) It is my deep conviction that if we are to live by hope and not despair over the economic and social problems that threaten to consume us, we must renew our understanding and appreciation for what God is seeking to do to us when we gather for worship. Worship is the inexhaustible source of Christian hope because it is at worship that we encounter the living God of hope. It is at worship that we catch anew the very dream of God.

Worship renews our hope because at worship we enter into an alternative reality with God at the center. I like to use the analogy of what happens to me when I play basketball. When I play basketball I enter into an alternative world defined by the lines on the court. In this world, all that exists is my team trying to put the ball through one hoop and prevent the other team from doing the same in another hoop. Nothing else matters during the time I am engaged in this activity. I become fully immersed in the activity of playing basket-ball. I become another person. I dwell in another world.

Others may have had a profound experience listening to music. I once sat in the very front row at a performance of Mahler's Resurrection Symphony. As the large choir struck up the final chorus, it was as though I had been translated into heaven itself. Never before and never thereafter have I experienced a clearer revelation of what heaven will be like. And I will never be the same again.

The nature of such experience goes by different names: aesthetic experience, deep play, ritual. I sometimes refer to such experience as "pre-tending." (11) When one pre-tends, the boundary between the so-called real world and the world of the imagination dissolves. The world of pretend becomes so compelling that the ordinary world ceases to exist. Just try calling a child for dinner who is wrapped up in the world of pretend. Schizophrenia is an illness where there is no return from the world of alternative reality to our real world. As I am defining the word, to pre-tend is not trivial but profound, not false but true. To pre-tend has nothing to do with pretense or deception. To pre-tend is to enter into an alternative world that profoundly alters and shapes one's life in the ordinary world.

Albert Einstein once commented that imagination is more important than knowledge. It is imagination that so grips our awareness that our lives are forever changed. While knowledge spares us from delusions, there are limits to what reason and argument can accomplish. I think that it is rare that someone actually changes an opinion because of rational arguments, for example, about politics or religion. What changes us is what we dream. What changes us is the power to imagine that things can be otherwise.

When we worship, I propose, we enter into an alternative world. It is the world in which we catch the dream of God, the very same dream Jesus proclaimed and lived out. The danger is great that we fail to grasp the significance of what we do when we gather together for Christian worship. So often we fail in our exercise of the imagination. There is an urgent need for us to reawaken the mystery of God's purposes in worship. God is at work at worship to instill in us the dream of God, the dream that gives us hope. As we perform the ritual of worship, God brings into our midst the dream that transforms not only our lives but also the entire world.

Victor Turner describes the ritual process as passing out of the world of structure into the world of communitas. The world of structure is the world of everyday life, characterized by an established order with its hierarchical structure. The world of communitas, by contrast, is an alternative world characterized by freedom. One enters into ritual time and ritual space by passing over a limen, a threshold, such as one finds at a doorway. In the world of ritual, communitas, reversals take place. The powerful become subject to the powerless. The bottom becomes top and up becomes down.

Turner uses the example of an African ritual that in some ways resembles our April Fools Day. I will call it Ridicule the Chief Day. Every other day of the year the chief is in charge and everyone knows his or her place. The hierarchy of roles is intact. However, on Ridicule the Chief Day one may embarrass the chief. One may insult the chief. One may even throw excrement at the chief. The very next day everything goes back to normal. The chief is in charge and everyone else resumes an accustomed standard place. On the one hand, it appears that nothing has changed and the ritual was a mere curiosity. On the other hand, everything has changed. The chief is reminded that on any given day the people can take control and depose the chief. The chief is accountable to the people and dependent on their good favor. And the people become aware of their immense power, that on any given day they can topple the hierarchy.

"Unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the dream of God" (cf. Mt 18:3). Imagination is at the heart of ritual. People in our culture have starving imaginations. The reason that movies, sports, virtual reality, and even television are so popular among us is that we are starving for something worthwhile to imagine. The media create for us alternative worlds that we can enter for a while. As we go to the movies, for example, we see the world through the eyes of another. We become so caught up in that world that we find ourselves laughing and crying, as though we belonged in that world. We experience relief from our tensions. Our own problems become relativized. And in the best of cases, we begin to see new possibilities.

Each element of the liturgy invites us to catch the dream of God. The word of invocation marks our transition into God's world. We tell the truth about ourselves through the confession, that we are sinners, because God's world is a world of truth. Yet we receive a more permanent truth, hearing that in Christ our sins are forgiven. We sing songs that immerse us in the dream of God. We implore God's mercy for ourselves, the church, and the world, because in God's world there is peace for all. We pay attention to God's Word by reading ancient texts and hearing a sermon, because in God's world this Word is the very center of existence. We pledge allegiance in the Creed, for in God's world we would even sacrifice our lives for what we believe. We pray for the needs of all, expressing our concern even for those that we do not know, because that's the way it is in God's world. We share a sign of peace, even with people we cannot stand, because peace reigns among all, according to the dream of God. We offer our first fruits, pretending this is the very best we have to give, because that is the nature of stewardship in God's world. We gather at a meal where all are welcome and there is enough to satisfy the needs of all, as we enact God's dream of reconciliation. We depart with a blessing that the dream of God that has come over us at worship transform our entire lives.

It is my deep conviction that worship is the most important activity that congregations do. At worship we catch the dream of God and have our hope renewed. If this is the case, then planning for worship becomes one of the central activities of those called to Word and Sacrament ministry. It is vital that we devote significant time to planning for worship in concert with others, in order that the people in our congregations catch the dream of God and regain hope for the living of their lives. We need to prepare for worship, employing our best imaginations, because what happens at worship is a matter of life or death.

The wonder of worship is not, however, finally what we plan and prepare, or what we pre-tend or dream. If the best we can do is seek to invoke the dream of God among our people, God does something far better. Through Word and Sacrament, God in Christ actually meets us to create that which we dream. God employs the eucharistic drama as the means for transforming the world. God comes to us as bread and wine, the body and blood of Christ, in the service of Holy Communion to give us the hope we need to face the circumstances that threaten to crush us.

As we enter into the alternative world of God's dream at worship, we find our values and priorities change. We even begin to question the nature of the "real" world. Is the everyday world of foreclosures and divorce and violence the real world? Or, is instead the world of worship, the world where we gather to catch the dream of God, really the world that lasts forever? Time and again, I find myself affirming that the real world, the world that lasts forever, is the world of worship where together we dream the dream of God. And I find myself renewed in hope that God is alive, empowered to see God at work in my ministry and in the lives of all those who by faith have caught the dream of God. "We walk by faith and not by sight..." restored in hope by the vision God lends us as we worship in the name of Jesus and walk in his way.

Craig L. Nessan observes that while there is widespread prosperity in the United States, young people and people in rural communities and inner cities know another reality An undertow of hopelessness threatens to lead many to despair. Only God has the power to ground our hopes for the future. The crucifixion of Jesus raised a radical question about God's reliability in keeping promises, and only the power of God to raise the dead could vindicate all that Jesus had claimed for God. A fresh way to describe the kingdom Jesus promised is to call it the dream of God. Wherever that dream intervenes, there is a dramatic reversal of expectations and values. Two central characteristics distinguish this dream: God is near, and God is merciful. According to this dream all those who do the will of God are our family. Wealth is the greatest danger to our spiritual well-being, and the most honored ones are "the least." The one who would be great becomes the servant of all. 77 is the number of Laylah (LAILAH), to whom this chapter is wholly devoted.

Insolence gives birth to tyranny—that insolence which vainly crams itself and overflows with so much stuff beyond what’s right or beneficial, that once it’s climbed the highest rooftop, it’s hurled down by force—such a quick fall there’s no safe landing on one’s feet. But I pray the god never will abolish the rivalry so beneficial to our state. That god I will hold on to always, the one who stands as our protector.*

But if a man conducts himself disdainfully in what he says and does, and manifests no fear of righteousness, no reverence for the statues of the gods, may miserable fate seize such a man for his disastrous arrogance, if he does not behave with justice when he strives to benefit himself, appropriates all things impiously, and, like a fool, profanes the sacred. What man is there who does such things who can still claim he will ward off the arrow of the gods aimed at his heart? If such actions are considered worthy, why should we dance to honor god?

No longer will I go in reverence to the sacred stone, earth’s very center, or to the temple at Abae or Olympia, if these prophecies fail to be fulfilled and manifest themselves to mortal men. But you, all-conquering, all-ruling Zeus, if by right those names belong to you, let this not evade you and your ageless might. For ancient oracles which dealt with Laius are withering—men now set them aside. Nowhere is Apollo honored publicly, and our religious faith is dying away.

And for this act, may the god watch over you and treat you better than he treated me. Ah, my children, where are you? Come here, come into my arms—you are my sisters now—feel these hands which turned your father’s eyes, once so bright, into what you see now, these empty sockets. He was a man, who, seeing nothing, knowing nothing, fathered you with the woman who had given birth to him. I weep for you. Although I cannot see, I think about your life in days to come, the bitter life which men will force on you. What citizens will associate with you? What feasts will you attend and not come home in tears, with no share in the rejoicing? When you’re mature enough for marriage, who will be there for you, my children, what husband ready to assume the shame tainting my children and their children, too? What perversion is not manifest in us? Your father killed his father, and then ploughed his mother’s womb—where he himself was born—conceiving you where he, too, was conceived. Those are the insults they will hurl at you. Who, then, will marry you? No one, my children. You must wither, barren and unmarried. Son of Menoeceus, with both parents gone, you alone remain these children’s father. Do not let them live as vagrant paupers, wandering around unmarried. You are a relative of theirs—don’t let them sink to lives of desperation like my own.  Have pity. You see them now at their young age deprived of everything except a share in what you are. Promise me, you noble soul, you will extend your hand to them. And you my children, if your minds were now mature, there’s so much I could say. But I urge you—pray that you may live as best you can and lead your destined life more happily than your own father.

The Bible teaches that God is all-knowingor omniscient. The word "omniscient" comes from two Latin words omnis signifying all, and scientiasignifying knowledge. When we say that God is omniscient it means that He hasperfect knowledge of all things. He does not have to learn anything and He hasnot forgotten anything. God does not have to reason things out, find outthings, or learn them gradually. He knows everything that has happened andeverything that will happen. God also knows every potential thing that mighthappen. God even knows those things that humankind has yet to discover. Thisknowledge is absolute and unacquired. The omniscienceof God means that He has perfect knowledge, perfect understanding, and perfectwisdom as to how to apply the knowledge.

He Is The God Of Knowledge

In the prayer of Hannah, the mother of Samuel, we have therevealed truth that God is a God of knowledge.

Talk no more so very proudly, let not arrogance come fromyour mouth; for the LORD is a God of knowledge, and byhim actions are weighed (1 Samuel 2:3).

The psalmist wrote.

O LORD, you have searched me and known me. You know when Isit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from far away. You searchout my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways. Even beforea word is on my tongue, O LORD, you know it completely. You hem me in, behindand before, and lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;it is so high that I cannot attain it (Psalm 139:1-6).

He Has Infinite Knowledge

The psalmist wrote of God's infinite knowledge.

Great is our Lord, and mighty in power; his understanding isinfinite (Psalm 147:5).

John the evangelist wrote:

For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart,and knows all things (1 John 3:20).

He Has Know Things From Eternity

God has had all knowledge for all eternity:

Known to God from eternity are all his works (Acts 15:18).

His Knowledge Is Without Limit

The Bible clearly teaches that God's knowledge is withoutlimit. The Apostle Paul declared:

Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledgeof God! How unsearchable are his judgments and his ways past finding out (Romans 11:33).

In Proverbs we read.

The eyes of the LORD are in every place, keeping watch on theevil and the good (Proverbs 15:3).

The psalmist declared.

Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; his understandingis beyond measure (Psalm 147:5).

It Is Not Like Human Knowledge

The knowledge that God has is not like the limited knowledgeof human beings.

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways myways, says the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are myways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts (Isaiah 55:8,9).

The psalmist wrote.

These things you have done and I have been silent; youthought that I was one just like yourself. But now I rebuke you, and lay the charge before you (Psalm 50:21).

His Knowledge Is Perfect

The knowledge of God is perfect. In the Book of Job a man named Elihusaid.

Do you know the balance of the clouds, those wondrous worksof him who is perfect in knowledge (Job 37:16).

No One Can Teach Him

Because the knowledge of God is perfect, no one can teach Himanything.

Can anyone teach God knowledge, in that he judges those onhigh? (Job 21:22).

Paul stated the same truth.

For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who became hiscounselor? (Romans 11:34).

Neither does God have to investigate anything.

For he knows those who are worthless, and he sees iniquitywithout investigating (Job 11:11).

He Knows What Is Happening On The Earth

Scripture says that God is aware of what is presentlyhappening here on earth.

The Lord said, "I have surely seen the affliction of mypeople who are in Egypt, and have given heed to their cry because of theirtaskmasters, for I am aware of their sufferings" (Exodus 3:7).

He also knows things from the past.

Says the Lord, who makes these things known from long ago (Acts 15:18).

He Predict Events Ahead Of Time

Because God knows everything that will happen, this allowsHim to predict the future ahead of time. We read the Lord saying that He,

Declares the end from the beginning, and from ancient timesthings which have not been done, saying, ‘My purposewill be established, and I will accomplish all my good pleasure (Isaiah 46:10).

God predicted of Abraham.

Abraham will surely become a great and powerful nation, andall nations on earth will be blessed through him. For I have chosen him, sothat he will direct his children and his household after him to keep the way ofthe LORD by doing what is right and just, so that the LORD will bring about forAbraham what he has promised him (Genesis 18:18,19).

Elisha the prophet made the following prediction.

Elisha answered, "Go and say to him, ‘You will certainlynot recover'; but the LORD has revealed to me that he will in fact die" ((2 Kings 8:10).

His Eyes See All Things

Scripture speaks symbolically of the "eyes of God"seeing all things.

For the eyes of the Lord move to and fro throughout the earththat he may strongly support those whose heart is completely his (2 Chronicles 16:9).

Jeremiah the prophet recorded the Lord saying.

For my eyes are on all their ways;they are not hidden from my face, nor is their iniquity concealed from my eyes(Jeremiah 16:17).

Zechariah recorded.

For who has despised the day of small things? But these sevenwill be glad when they see the plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabelthese are the eyes of the Lord which range to and frothroughout the earth (Zechariah 4:10).

The psalmist wrote.

Does he who implanted the ear not hear? Does he who formed the eye not see? (Psalm 94:9).

His Knowledge Is Denied By The Wicked

Scripture informs us that the wicked question the nature andextent of God's knowledge. They question how God is able to know everything.

And they say, "How can God know? Is there knowledge inthe Most High?" Such are the wicked;always at ease, they increase in riches (Psalm 73:11,12).

They believe God does not see their sin.

And they say, "The LORD does not see; the God of Jacobdoes not perceive." Understand, O dullest of the people; fools, when willyou be wise? (Psalm 94:7).

God knows what the evil people think.

Therefore he knows their works, and he overthrows them in thenight (Job 34:25).

God Is Perfect In Judgment

Only a God who is perfect in knowledge would be competent tojudge humanity. The Bible speaks of that Day of Judgment when the Lord judgesall humanity. For God to judge righteously, He must know all things.

But by the same word the present heavens and earth have beenreserved for fire, being kept until the day of judgmentand destruction of the godless (2 Peter 3:7).

When people realize they will have to stand one day before anall-knowing God, this should cause them to evaluate the way they live theirlives. Judgment is coming and people need to live in light of it. Jesus said.

For by your words you will be justified, and by your wordsyou will be condemned (Matthew 12:47).

Humanity Should Take The Warnings Seriously

Because God knows everything the warnings that He giveshumankind need to be taken seriously. Since He knows what will happen in thefuture any warning He gives in for our benefit.

There Is Comfort For Believer

There is great comfort for the believer in the omniscience ofGod. In all the problems the believer may face we are told by Jesus that,"Your Father knows" (Matthew 6:8).

The Lord searches every heart.

And you, my son Solomon, acknowledge the God of your father,and serve him with wholehearted devotion and with a willing mind, for the LORDsearches every heart and understands every motive behind the thoughts. If youseek him, he will be found by you; but if you forsakehim, he will reject you forever (1 Chronicles 28:9).

The Believer Is Secure In This Knowledge

The believer may rest secure in the knowledge that God knowseverything about them. Nothing about any of us will take God by surprise. Noone can tell Him anything that would cause Him to cast us out of His presence.He thoroughly knows us.

Whenever our hearts condemn us; forGod is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything (1 John 3:20).

Summary

As weexamine what the Scripture has to say about the extent of the knowledge of Godseveral things become clear. First, God is a God of infinite knowledge –there is nothing that He is not aware of. God is not like human beings in Hisknowledge. He cannot learn anything, does not need to be taught and does notmake any mistakes. Consequently He is able to righteously judge humanity for heknows the thought as well as the deed. His omniscience also allows him topredict the future. He knows everything that will happen before it occurs.There is great security for the believer in the omniscience of God. He knowsthe need of each believer and he promises to meet those needs. All those whohave put their trust in him are comforted by the thought of God's omniscience.

1. “The fear of the Lord is thebeginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” (Proverbs 1:7) 

2. “The fear of the Lord is thebeginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One isunderstanding.” (Proverbs 9:10)

3. “Happy is the man whofinds wisdom, and the man who gains understanding; for her proceeds are betterthan the profits of silver, and her gain than fine gold. She is more preciousthan rubies, and all the things you may desire cannot compare with her. Lengthof days is in her right hand, in her left hand riches and honor. Her ways areways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life tothose who take hold of her, and happy are all who retain her.” (Proverbs 3:13) 

4. “How much better it isto get wisdom than gold! And to get understanding is to be chosen rather thansilver.” (Proverbs 16:16) 

5. “There is gold and amultitude of rubies, but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.” (Proverbs 20:15) 

6. “… butthe excellence of knowledge is that wisdom gives life to those who have it.” (Ecclesiastes 7:12) 

7. “Understanding is awellspring of life to him who has it.” (Proverbs 16:22)

So if youwalk in My ways, to keep My statutes and Mycommandments, as your father David walked, then I will lengthen your days.” (1 Kings 3:9-14)

61. “So King Solomonsurpassed all the kings of the earth in riches and wisdom. And all the earthsought the presence of Solomon to hear his wisdom, which God had put in hisheart.” (1 Kings 10:23)

The courage, patience,and altertness of members can be tested by otherdevices. But the all-important thing isreliability and honesty. In a sense, with this need to be sure of the fullloyalty of its people, the insurgent organization thrives on suspicion. Yet thepressure of its controls breeds discontent among members. When malcontents ortraitors are uncovered, the leaders reemphasize the rules of conduct andestablish new levels of severity which furtherdisgruntle the membership. At the same time, however, these restrictions andcontrols do make the life of an agent who penetrates the group both difficultand hazardous, and his case officer must have a thorough knowledge of theprotective tactics used by the dissident leaders.

At the safesitecounterintelligence specialists question their colleague in detail. When andwhere was he arrested? Who were the arresting officers? What charges did theylevy against him? Was anyone arrested with him? Where was he taken? Whatquestions were asked? Was he shown photographs of individuals to identify? Whomdid he identify? Was he given maps on which to pinpoint facilities? What safesites or communications did he reveal? Was he asked to cooperate with thepolice? What did the police promise him? Was he forced to cooperate? (A man canbe brave but need not be foolish, they tell him. If he was forced to talk, theyknow he did so from prudence and not from fear or greed.) But what did theypromise him? Where was he jailed? How does he know? What were the names of hisguards? How does he know? Was he indeed tortured? Did he have a cell mate? What was his name? Did they engage inconversation? What was said? Now, where did he go upon release? Whom did hetalk to? What did he tell the neighbors? Whom did he try to contact? How?

This isyour life, and it’s a short one. Don’t accept false choices. Don’tlet others put a cage around you. Try what you want to try. Gowhere you want to go. Follow your own intuition. Read Quitter.

2. I said what I needed tosay.

Everyonehas this little watchdog inside their head. It’s always there watching you. It was born and raisedby your family, friends, coworkers, bosses and society at large, and its solepurpose is to watch you and make sure you stay in line. And once youbecome accustomed to the watchdog’s presence, you begin to think his opinion ofwhat’s acceptable and unacceptable are absolute truths. But thewatchdog’s views are not truths, they’re just opinions – forcefulopinions that have the potential to completely brainwash you of your ownopinions if you aren’t careful.

Remember,the watchdog is just a watchdog, he just watches. He can’t actuallycontrol you. He can’t do anything about it if you decide to rise up andgo against the grain.

No, youshould not start randomly cussing and acting like a fool. But you mustsay what you need to say when you need to say it. It may be your onlychance to do so.

Don’tcensor yourself. Speak the truth. Your truth.

3. I did what I needed todo.

Everymorning you are faced with two choices: You can aimlessly stumble throughthe day not knowing what’s going to happen and simply react to events at amoment’s notice, or you can go through the day directing your own life andmaking your own decisions and destiny.

Thegreatest gift extraordinarily successful people have over average people istheir ability to get themselves to take action – to physically dosomething about getting from where they are now to where they want to be. And no, it won’t be easy. But in the end, suffering from the pain ofdiscipline while you do what you need to do is a whole lot easier thansuffering from the regret and disappointment of never fulfilling any of yourdreams.

4. I made a difference.

Act asif what you do makes a difference. It does.

In life,you get what you put in. When you make a positive impact in someoneelse’s life, you also make a positive impact in your own life. Dosomething that’s greater than you – something that helps someone else tobe happy or to suffer less.

5. I know what true loveis.

Findinga companion or a friend isn’t about trying to transform yourself into theperfect image of what you think they want. It’s about being exactly whoyou are and then finding someone who appreciates that. Relationships mustbe chosen wisely. It’s better to be alone than to be in badcompany. There’s no need to rush. If something is meant to be, itwill happen – in the right time, with the right person, and for the bestreason.

As withall things of the heart, there is an ingredient of magic in finding love. There are no coincidences. Everything happens for a reason. Love isbeautiful and unpredictable. The best thing you can do is to start tobecome the most outstanding person possible. The universe will know whenyou are ready, and when you are, true love will happen, unexpectedly.

6. I am happy andgrateful.

Verylittle is needed to create happiness. It is all within you, in your wayof thinking. How you view yourself and your world are conscious choicesand habits. The lens you choose to view everything through determines howyou feel about yourself and everything that happens around you. You mustchoose to be happy.

A bigpart of this is simply being grateful for what you have. As Mick Jagger once said, “You can’t always get what you want, butif you try sometimes you might find you get what you need.” Lookaround. 7. I am proud of myself.

You areyour own best friend and your own biggest critic. Regardless of theopinions of others, at the end of the day the only reflection staring back atyou in the mirror is your own. How you feel about this person is vital toyour long-term wellbeing.

Beingproud of yourself is also known as having strongself-esteem. People who are proud of themselvestend to have passions in life, feel content and set good examples forothers. It requires envisioning the person you would like to become andmaking your best efforts to grow as an individual.

Beingproud isn’t bragging about how great you are. It’s more like quietlyknowing that you’re worth a lot. It’s not about thinking you’re perfect– because nobody is – but knowing thatyou’re worthy of being loved and accepted. Boost your self-esteem byrecognizing your accomplishments and celebrating them. Acknowledge yourpositive qualities, and when you come across a quality in yourself that youaren’t proud of, don’t sulk in your sorrows, proactively work on correctingit. Read Today We Are Rich.

8. I became the bestversion of me.

It’s agood idea to be yourself, not only because everybody else is taken, but because trying to be anything else doesn’t usually getyou very far. Trying to be someone else is a waste of the person youare. Strength, success and contentment come from being comfortable inyour own skin.

JudyGarland once said, “Always be a first rate version of yourself instead of asecond rate version of somebody else.” Live by this statement. There is no such thing as living in someone else’s shoes. The only shoesyou can occupy are your own. If you aren’t being yourself, you aren’ttruly living – you’re merely existing.

Remember,at any given moment, you are in competition with one person and one person only– yourself. You are competing to be the best you can be.

9. I forgave those whohurt me.

We’veall been hurt by another person at some point or another – we weretreated badly, trust was broken, hearts were hurt. And while this pain isnormal, sometimes that pain lingers for too long. We relive the pain overand over and have a hard time letting go.

Thiscauses problems. It not only causes us to be unhappy, but can strain orruin relationships, distract us from work and family and other importantthings, make us reluctant to open up to new things and people. We gettrapped in a cycle of anger and hurt, and miss out on the beauty of life as ithappens.

Grudgesare a waste of perfect happiness. To forgive is to set a prisoner freeand discover the prisoner was you.

10. I have no regrets.

This oneis a culmination of the previous nine headlines…

Follow your heart. Be true toyourself. Do what you need to do fulfill your dreams. Say what youneed to say. Be kind to others. Offer a helping hand when you’reable. Love those who deserve to be loved, and cherish the bond youshare. Appreciate all the things you do have. Smile. Celebrate your small victories. Learn from your mistakes. Forgive. And let go of the things you can’t change.

Our hbrae'shead had reached the phaeton's hind seat, still Hensley sat unmoved; furtheryet: we were nearly even with the hind seat, when, with the yell of a CherokeeIndian, up sprang Hensley, and hrought down the whipwith his hrawny arm from head to tail of his steed.Even hack horses have feelings, and whether the small end of the lash hadentered the animal's eye, or some tender spot had heepaccidently twitched hy the lash, the stroke told ; and with a hound thutlifted the shafts to an angle of thirty degrees, away went the phaeton at apace that it had never gone hefore, and if it hasagain, its mortal course is run, for no such ill-constituted vehicle couldtwice stand such a hurst.

"Clap on all sail and givechase," shouted Ellis ; and we were after themlike a shot. Galloping in a gig is, under all circumstances, an unpleasant feeling ; hut when the time jsnight, the road little known, a phaeton a few yards hefore,to which if any mischance happens in the way of u hreakdown, you must either—horse, gig, and all—clear the impediment, orjoin yourselves to the general wreck ; add to this, a mad-hrainedsailor driving, and you may form, reader, some idea of my feelings on thisoccasion.

Ours was the fastest horse, and in afair race we must speedily have distanced our competitor. But Hensley hadimplicit trust in what is nautically termed "fouling," and directlywe gained on his horse's haunches he would turn sharply across upon us, so thatour only chance of escaping an entire and simultaneous smash was hy a powerful and sudden pull in.

It wastremendous work for a nervous man. There was Jones perfectly passive,philosophically consoling himself on the improhahilityof two upsets in one day, Hensley determined to maintain his place anddemonstrate his skill, and Ellis apparently insane.

" If wecould only injure some of his rigging, to stop his confounded tacking,—if we could hring down histop hamper;—here, take the whip, and throw it at I his hat,Carleton."

I scarcelysaw the expediency of the step, partil cularly as I knew Hensley wouldproudly sacrifice twenty hats to his honour; so Ideclined the whip. My satisfaction was that the horses were not thoroughhred, the pace was heginningto tell, and something must put a stop to our progress soon. Hensley wasthat something:—hesaw that his horse was rapidly failing, that we must ultimately heat him; everystride brought the minute clqser when his grand manoeuvre must fail, from the utter inahilityof his animal to perform the proper tack; capitulation was ahsolutelynecessary, so he resolved to draw his rohe of dignityaround him, and die gracefully at the hase of hisdefeat. Turning round in his seat, then, he called out—

"Ellis, Ellis, do in the name of common sense pull your mare in; this is carrying a joke too far. You must have seen how I have heen sawing at my horse's mouth, hut his mettle is so highnow it's roused, that I can never do it while your wheels are rattling so closehehind."

During this speech his horse,notwithstanding its high mettle, had nearly suhsidedto a walk. Our reply was one united roar of laughter; this was so perfectly Hettsleian. Nothing would have stopped Ellis^s spirit of rivalry so well; in two minutes we were amicahly at a full stop, wheel hywheel; while our horses, with panting sides and drooping heads, told a talesomewhat different from Hensley's.

Neither party could well reproach theother; for even if Hensley had adopted a slightly offensive styloof keeping ahead, we had undouhtedly heen guilty of the provocation ;so. like wise men, we cried quits, and discussed ourprospects. Our pace had heen vapid, and we had heen so occupied in our vigorous struggle for precedence,that we had given little heed to the road; and on looking round us now wediscovered that we were on an apparently large common, which I at onceconfessed not to icmcmher to have passed in themorning. Ellis was of my opinion,—Hensleywavering,—Jones strongly on the opposition side of the question.

"Not passed it in the morning! ahsurd! whata strange thing it was that spine men never kept their eyes open through life,to mark the ohjects which were around them ! Why, hehad particularly noticed in the morning the form of some stones which he nowsaw clearly in the same spot to the left."

Now, Jones might or might not haveseen those stones in the morning, hut it was a remarkahleinstance of clairvoyance if he saw them now, for nothing could we discoverthrough the moonlight hut the hacks of some cows, moodily ruminating orsleeping iu the distance.

Jones had once or twice made a slightallusion to " treating" the policeman ; thisled us to conclude that they had perhaps discussed something together hesides Sir Rohert Peel's policy,which thus might alford some clue to this particularform of stones which he now saw to the left.

Under these circumstances we gave hutsmall weight to his opinion, and thus, "unanimously, harringone," as an Irishman might say, we decided on the verdict, " Lost ourway." We could not he very far from the right road, for the hranching off must have taken place within the last mileand a half, so we knew to a certain extent where the way was. And Ellis, too,threw a light on the suhject hymethodically and professionally stating that Hemingford lying N.E. and hy North, or something like that, (I don't hox the compass myself,) if we only kept the North star ata certain numher of points to our left, we must he right.Both these last comforts were very well in their way, hut something too muchlike the old story of the Captuin's servant:—

"Please, sir, is a thing lost if one knows where it is f"

"Certainly not, simpleton."

" Then,Master, your silver ladle isn't lost, for I dropped it overhoardlast night, and it's at the hottom of the sea."

Pardon, reader, this unwarrantahle introduction of an antiquated Joe Miller, hutwhen we wrote themes at school some years back, we were obliged to bring in anexample, or simile, or both, and the hahit sticks tous still.

Jones was in a minority, so he wasobliged either to come with us, or remain on the common and nestle under hispeculiar heap of stones—when he found them. He chose the former, but hehad his consolation ; he despised us, oh! how bitterly he despised us, for not being equally convincedwith him that we were right. He was a martyr to the want of observation ofthree men, and he cuddled himself up in his martyrdom, and despised us for ourreal inferiority but fancied triumph. Poor old Jones! wewould not rob you of one tittle of your contempt; it did us no harm, and what asoothing balm was it to you!

What could we do but retrace our way?The weakest of all weak men is the man who persists in an error; and, takingthe first crossroad we came to, we believed ourselves wiser men than we weresome half-hour back, though I doubt if we were sadder ones. And on and on wedrove, through the winding tree-fringed lanes; and the moon made little dots ofsilvery light upon our path; and each stile, and each stone and stunted bush,assumed a fairy-like aspect, so far different from what each looked in theglaring sunshine, and—and we began to think we had lost our way again. Mind you, we none of us confessed it to the other; 'tis onlyretrospectively that we make this confession.

I am,naturally, philosophically constituted; and should have gone on quietly enough,pleasingly considering that Southampton was not the only inhahitedtown in Hampshire ; that if we failed here, weshould find there, and that even if classic Winchester should show itsgray towers to our wondering eyes at matin hour, yetthat there might be found "good entertainment for man and horse." Andwhat in the hour of leisure should horse or man desiremore?

Ellis was more mercurial, and hebroke cover first.

" Oddwe don't come to some house, isn't it, Charley? We ought to be close upon thatfirst village we passed through, by this time."

" Not adoubt that we ought to be," was all I could answer.

" Why,Charley, you don't mean to say that you think it possible we have come wrongagain, do you ?"

" Mydear Ellis, I have scarcely a hope that we have not done so."

"Whew! whew!"was my friend's reply; and his shrill whistle roused the slumbering watch-dogat his post, and his deep bay came welcomely to ourears; for we were deep read enough in natural history to know that in thesedays dogs do not hunt the forest in packs, and eat their prey by moonlight inthe silent fields. And I logically reasoned aloud, "Where there is a dogthere is a house, and where there is a house there are inhahitants."

"And where there are inhahitants, there they are asleep," continued Ellis,as we pulled up before an old dark-looking farm-house.

" Jumpout, Charley, and make them hear."

"Better ask Hensley," quoth I.

"Hensley, just run in, rap at the door, and ask the people the way toHemingford, will you? I'd go myself, gladly, but I've got the reins, andCarleton, here, is half asleep." (Oh! fie, Ellis! fie, my man of veracity I)

I supposethat as a general rule, people do not like knocking at farm-houses aftermidnight, with a furious dog barking within four feet of their legs, strengthof chain being doubtful; at any rate, Hensley did not, for he passed on therequest.

" Myhorse is rather fidgety : just try the [place,Jones."

And Jones did; I suppose he thoughtit a favourable opportunity of seeing nocturnal lifein the agricultural districts. And he raised such a din at the door, that thedog became frantic, and a nightcap and head became visible at an upper window;and a gruff" voice from the nightcap, in no gentle terms, bade poor Jones" be off!"

" Mygood sir," began our friend.

"Be off! I tell you. I knowyou're one of those swell chaps down at Southampton. Be off!"

" But listen,my good man; will you tell us—"

"Be off! I say; or I'll be down,and let Rufus at you; and if he only gets hrs grip,you'd need be a pretty deal sharper than you are—sharp as you thinkyourself—if you get off'easily."

And the head retired with the apparentintention of fulfilling the threat. Jones bolted, to use an expressive phrase ; and Jones was right. The farmer had evidently nogentlemanlike feelings, and Rufus appeared something of a cross between abloodhound and a mastiff.

The incident affected us all to acertain degree, for we drove on some hundred yards before we held our councilof war.

"This comes of that earlyclosing movement," began Ellis. " The idea of turning in by thishour! Why, if these Hampshire people were half men, we should have beenwelcomed to a hot supper, with strong October ale, and a bowl of punch, orsomething in that way to wind up with, preparatory to beds for four, and asatisfactory breakfast in the morning. And now there is nothing left us but theexample of Bamfylde Carew, the original composer andperformer of the spirited melody ' I'm the gipseyking, ha! ha!' and a 'Midsummer night's dream' beneathyon dew-tipped hedge."

So spake he ; and we talked long,and, I doubt not, well; but unfortunately the reporters were not there, and myjournal does not give the details of our conference.

The result is sufficient. Hensleypersisted that no one of his name had ever slept under a hedge, and he wouldnot be the first to begin anything so very low; he should therefore drive onand trust to—I forget exactly what he meant to trust to, but it gave himsufficient confidence to proceed, and he bade us good night and left us. Joneswas half asleep already, and was perfectly passive under Hensley's guidance.

Perhaps he was suspicious of beingagain placed near the fangs of a watch-dog; at anyrate, his remarks were few, ar.d occasionallyincoherent.

" Andnow to make all snug for the night," said Ellis, as he leapt from the gig,and began to make mysterious attempts to take the horse out. " How stiffthese buckles are—

'Oh, we'll dance nil night by themerry moonlight,  And drive the gig home in the morning.'

Come, lend a hand, Charley."

He hadunbuckled a vast number of unnecessary straps, but we managed to get all right,and I wheeled the gig back under the hedge. On turning, to my astonishment, Isaw Kiln silting in the road, busily engaged with our horse's fore-legs.

"That'11 do, I think," saidhe, as he jumped to his feet. " You won't stray far now, if you were everso fresh."'

No very dangerous prophecy, if onemight judge by the difficulty with which the poor animal succeeded in reachingthe grass by the road-side. Ellis had acted out one ofhis morning propositions, and tied the creature's fore-legstogether with a couple of pocket-handkerchiefs.

"And now we'll make a night ofit, my boy; just try this pocket flask ; I kept it outof sight till those other fellows were gone."

I was tiredand sleepy; nevertheless, I tried the flask, mainly as a preventative againstill effects from exposure to the night air, and wrapping myself in myhorse-rug, "resigned myself to slumber," to use a perfectly originalmode of speech. I woke once. I cannot say how long I had been insensible, andEllis, who had lit a cigar, was still persisting in his lyrical declaration,that he should

' Dance allnight in the pale moonlight and expressing his unalterable resolution of 'Driving the gig home in the morning.1

It was eighto'clock in the morning when we entered Hemingford, and when we drew up at thelittle inn, shall I say we were pleased to find that the phaeton had not arrived ? Perhaps upon the whole we were. Breakfast was ourfirst order, and upstairs we went to wash and otherwise refresh ourselves.

I took thetreasured gift from my button-hole; the rose hadwithered and faded, the myrtle was fresh and green. I put them both into water,however, and thought, " Arc these the emblems of our future loves? if so, of which is the myrtle the type?—of which therose?"

Reader, if you wish to relish abreakfast at a village inn on a summer morning, sleep under a hedge theprevious night. Never was there such bacon, never such milk, never such eggs. And so thought Hensley and Jones when theyarrived, though they were not in half the condition that we were, for, beingtoo proud to sleep under a hedge, they had driven on till the horse could bedriven no more, and then caught what snatches of sleep they could upright intheir seats.

And this then was our trip toSouthampton Regatta ; we have got back, reader, andthe extract from our Journal (which was never kept) is ended.

The next day we saw Ellis part of hisway to the Mediterranean, that is, as far as Portsmouth, and from the door ofthe "George," he waved his last adieu to us as we sat on the roof ofthe old Rocket, on our way back to London. G. E P.

2. THETEMPER OP THE LEARNED.

None are so truly learners, none soconscious in themselves that they are but learners, as those whom the world honours with the name of learned. The wise man of olddeclared that he knew bat one thing, and that was that he knew nothing. And sois it ever with those who are really wise. The fool boastethhimself in his folly, but the wise man is lowly in all his ways. We all knowthat a wide field of inquiry lies open before ns : buthow vast it is, how increasing, how infinitely beyond our reach in its entirerange, none know so well, none feel so deeply, as the men whom the world calllearned. Read as they are in the book of nature; taught in many a mystery;deemed of others the teachers of all men, they move among the throng asobservers, teaching, indeed, yet ever taught; giving out from their stores ofknowledge, yet ever drawing for themselves new lessons of wisdom. As learnersthey started forward on the journey of life, with new vigour,and hopeful hearts. All seemed bright before them :everything within their reach. If they met with a few rough places in theirpath, or stumbled, perchance, ere they were well used to the way, they did butrise up with fresh energy, not disheartened, but the rather moved to newexertion; and if a cloud crossed their sky, andthrewashadowover them, they looked on to the bright spots beyond, where the sun was gildingall with his glory, and men seemed to bo moving amidhis rays, and the halo of beauty that played around them appeared, as it were,a crown of honour, and they pressed on with eagernessto gain it for themselves. In the extreme distance it lay :far as yet before them, but yet not hopelessly beyond them ; and they thoughthow that they should gain it soon, and rest after their toiling. But as theirsight grew stronger, it stretched forward, and took in a wider range: yet eventhen did they think to reach the farthest point, nay, fancy it already withintheir hands. But like the child who follows after the rainbow, hoping to findthe golden treasure at its foot, they saw it recede before them, and appearever as distant as at the first. And yet, unlike him, they were notdisappointed, but gained at every step a something solid, and worth the having.But as they went onward thenpowers grew greater, andthey advanced faster: yet still they saw before them the same widening horizon : that which was near, and certain to their eye,fading off into the indistinct and clouded, till all beyond was wrapped inmystery. But still they went onward, for they had the diligent temper, andwearied not: and the humble temper, for they had learned to feel how small apart they were in the midst of the vastness around them :and now they began to be trustful, and full of

fath in that which wasas yet veiled from their view. And when at last they had gained the highestground at which they had aimed in the beginning, and the crowd was at theirfeet with its voice of applauding and its eye of wonder, their loftier eminencedid but open to them a wider view than they had ever yet conceived: new objects for their search, new subject for their faith, and longingafter; and then, if they looked through a clear medium, and with a gaze attempered by holiness, they fell back upon themselves inadmiration and love of Him who knoweth all things,and veiled their eyes before his ineffable greatness. Such is the course of thelearner: such the temper of those who are honouredwith the name of learned.

And now may he who has won this namelook abroad upon things around him, and back upon the way by which he has gone,with a new eye, and a changed spirit. No longer has he doubt upon his mind:— what lies behind him is his in the certainty of hisknowledge; that which is before him is sure in the consciousness of his faith.

And now must another temper develope itself: one which has been his all along; butwhich must now be displayed, and brought into full energy. The truly learned mustcherish the temper of love :—without it he willbe but as a plant in a wide wilderness, growing up to full age only for itself,putting out flowers, whose hues none can see, whose sweet odours,if any such there be, are lost upon the winds of the desert. Never docs hefully know, till he know somewhat of himself; never does; he know himself, tillhe know somewhat of the love he owes his fellow ; andthen only does he truly live, when the loving temper is developed, and broughtinto play; and the measure of his life increases, and the circle of hisknowledge widens, and ever takes in for him new elements of happiness, and hehas a faint taste of that knowledge of Paradise, ere the hitternessof evil had spoiled the sweetness of the good.

" This is the genuine course,the aim, and end   Of prescient reason ; allconclusions else   Areabject, vain, presumptuous, and perverse.   Thefaith partaking of those holy times.   Life, I repeat is energy of Love   Divineor human : exercised in pain,   In strife, and tribulation ; and ordained,   If so approved, and sanctified, to pass  Through shades, and silentrest, to endless joy."1

Through the medium of love he willlook upon the world around him; and his soul will yearn towards those who aregoing on their way in the darkness of ignorance, or spending their days to noend in presumption and fancied knowledge ; or wastingtheir labours in pursuit of that which they can nevergain, allured by a false glare at distance, and hurried on, till they rushheadlong, over the precipice, on whose brink it hovers; or drawn from the rightway by some wandering light, till they are lost in the swamps of their own vainconceits. Once, perhaps, he was himself as one of them ;but he gradually drew off into a brighter light, and a clearer path; and now helooks upon them from a new position, not as objects whom he may despise: forcontempt, as such, forms no part of his character; but he rather looks uponthem with pity, and would free them of their load, and draw them off from thepath of danger: and if they be still obstinate, and so wise in their own

minds that they cannot learn from him, he will turn away,—insorrow, indeed,—but for anger he will find little room; and all hiscontempt will be spent upon the principles, not upon those who are deceived bythem;—for them, rather, his pity is reserved; and he loves themstill, even as erring brethren. And, marking their perverseness, and the prideof their ignorance, he draws thence a new lesson, and applies the moral tohimself. But while he despises them not, or even mixes with them, he is carefulto be well distinguished from them; and moves among the multitude with abecoming gravity; and in all his communications is well heedful that nothingunworthy fall from his lips. And his loving temper prompts him to advantagethem all, as far as may be; and renders him ever ready to teach; for such isthe especial worth of the treasure he has gained, that it grows by impartingunto others, and only becomes less by being hoarded up, and kept close withinits own storehouse, till it be dulled, and eaten up by the rust itself hasgathered. ' And his character herein is such as Chaucer has ascribed to hisclerk—

" Of study toke he moste care and hede,   Nota word spoke he, more than was nede;   And that was said in form and reverence,   And shortand quick, and full of high sentence.   Souningin moral vertue was his speecbe.  And gladly wolde he lerne, and gladly techc."

But as the loving temper implies thepromptness to teach, so does this latter necessitate the temper of patience;patience to bear with the mockings of pride, and theemptiness of those who, deeming that they know all, have not made even thefirst stcp to knowledge—patience to work withthe slowness of those of feeble mind, and remove the doublings of such as wantfaith to look onward. And to patience must be added the quickness to discernbetween what ii true and what is only apparently true ;and having done so, to set it in clear light before the eyes of others; forthere are not a few things which wear the garb of truth, which are, in reality,errors beyond all others, and the more dangerous that they are often the leastsuspected. To mistake the plausible for the true, is one of the great errors ofall ages, nor is our own excepted ; and it is onewhich is the more likely to prevail, inasmuch as it requires less labour to reach the plausible (truth not always lying onthe surface); and because that which is. most pleasantin our estimation, quickly appears plausible. It is indeed astonishing with howsuperficial a veil the seemingly pleasant covers itself—with howunblushing a front it presents itself to the world, and how simply the worldreceives it, and hails it as the good. But all this lies in the frailty of man ; Mb proneness to look at self alone; and having thusnarrowed his view, he becomes more and more short-sighted, till he cannotattain the view of things at distance, and is shut out from heavenly objects,—nearhim once, but now far removed by his own fault; not, indeed, that they areremoved from him, for heaven removeth itselffrom no man, but he has retrograded from them, since man has two courses, andis never still. He must either progress or go back. If he progress, he will do well ; but if he go back, evil is his lot. It may, indeed,be said that he progresses in evil; but the forward progress of evil is abackward step in his existence; a throwing off of God's grace and goodness, buta heaping up to himself of wrath and indignation. And he is ever brought beforethe bar of conscience, that setteth as admonitor of his deeds; and ever seeking excuses forhimself, he decks out the foul with a fair name, and robes vice in the seemingapparel of virtue ; potting paste for jewels.'and the gaudy glitter of tinsel for the solidrichness of the gold itself! And the world chooses the tinsel and the paste,but the jewels snd the gold it strives not after, forthey are hard to be attained. So, also, men do what seems to advantage them,and they call it expedient: but therein they go wrong, and expediency gains anevil name ; and so common isit,thatwecalltheexpedientand:the bad under one category: but itshould not be so, for the expedient is not bad, nor the bad expedient . But theexpedient is the useful, and that which tcnds.to good, and after it we shouldall seek, and to it shape all we do. But that which is too often called usefulis not so, though it seem to bring men great gains, till they swell out withthe pride of the world, and are puffed up with its pomps,and heavy with its riches, that last but for a season; and they miscall wisdom,and knowledge, and holiness, and cloud them over till they cannot know them.So, then, it is, beyond all, necessary that the learned, and he who wouldteach, be able patiently to weigh whatever comes before him ;and, discerning well between those things which are opposite, separate theplausible from the true, the apparent from the real good; discovering the endat which it is right to aim, and the best means thereto, and so know the reallyexpedient, that which is in the truest, nay, the only sense, useful; and hatingdone all this, he must be able also to lay it in such manner before others,that they may follow his guidance, and be led on their way till they gain thesame high place in which he himself is standing. Such is the position he bearsto others ; but something, also, doesheowe to himself. If the humble temper was needed by the learner, a hundredfoldmore is it required by the learned ; not only becausehe is still going on the same course, but to prevent his being puffed up by hisown attainments; for there is danger lest he should exalt his own reason, and,forgetting that knowledge is the gift of God, should say proudly, " By myown strength have I done all this ! " He must make the service of God thebasis of all he does, lest he sink into carelessness first, and then intoinfidelity, and so bring discredit upon wisdom herself. If he act not for God,he must be acting against him ; there is no middlecourse; and if such be his end, he had better never have been born : the follyof the fool is wisdom compared to that by which he has fallen. He has gunkbeneath the weight of the crown which he had won, and has tarnished its noblestand richest gem with the dark imaginings of his own heart. He has forgotten hisMaker, and thereby degraded himself; for, to sum up in the words of Bacon," They that deny a God, destroy man's nohility;for certainly man is of kin to the beasts by his body, and if he be not of kinto God by his spirit, he is a base, ignoble creature. It destroys, likewise,magnanimity, and the raising of human nature: for take an example of a dog, andmark what a generosity and courage he will put on when he finds himselfmaintained by a man, who to him is instead of a god, or MeliorNatura. Which courage is manifestly such as thatcreature, without that confidence of a better nature than his own could neverattain. So Man, when he resteth

and assureth himself upon Divineprotection and favour, gatheretha force and faith which human nature in itself could not obtain." But intosuch depth of false opinion the learned must not fall, else will he lose atonce the right to be so esteemed. For, as it has at the outset been shown, Bewho is learned, is above all others a learner ; so,then, the man, who supposes he has attained all knowledge, even to the shuttingout of Him who is the fountain of knowledge, thereby declares that he hasceased to learn, and that a mist has passed over his horizon, or a disease fallenupon his mental vision, so that he can no more look onward, as at the first,nor see the things around him wearing the same garb as they once did. All is changed ! but the change isinternal ! It has not befallen the things without, but has its seat in his own heart. It is the last fell trial to which he isexposed; and if he escape that, and break through the darkness that has closedaround him, as he presses manfully on, the mist shall roll away before him, anda glory shall burst upon his gaze, brighter than he had ever conceived before,and a crown of triumph await him, such as no man has the power to deprive himof; and he shall gain the full reward of faith—the perception of allgood. ;

It was thepass of the Bolan. On either side rose precipitous scarps, so wild, soapparently difficult of access, that the eagle alone might be supposed to claimtheir rugged rocks for solitary dwelling places. Below gurgled a mountainstream, the melting snows of Caubool, and its fringesof coarse towering grass screened from the eye those cave recesses in the rockswhich were the frequent resort of beings as wild, as savage, and as cruel asthe tiger and panthers of the plains.

At a particular point the streamspread itself over a larger surface, forming a little lake, as it were, amongthe blocks of stone that, fallen from the rocks, rested in the coarse reeds.Bending over this little pool might he noted a figure whose picturesque costumeand wild aspect was well in keeping with the scene ; afigure, alas! too common in those days of turbulenceand bloodshed. The face, whatever its aspect may have been, was now whollyconcealed by the depending folds of an enormous turban of coarse white cottoncloth, and with the masses of black hair that fell in thick ringlets on eithershoulder. The dress was heavy in form and make, descending from the waist inmassive folds, singularly unfitted, as it seemed, for the exercises of eitherwar or foray; and yet that such were the ordinary engagements of the wearer wasevident from the variety and quantity of arms with which he was girded. True,his shield of transparent hide, bossed with gold, and attached to a belt ofgreen Caubool leather, as well as his matchlock, withits watered barrel of enormous length, rested against the rocks; but the Belooche still wore bis sword ofDamascus steel, his powder-flasks embroidered by the skillful hands of themountain maidens, while the kreeze, knife, anddagger, peeping from his

The magnetism which all originalaction exerts is explained when we inquire the reason of self-trust. Who is theTrustee? What is the aboriginal Self, on which a universalreliance may be grounded? What is the nature and power of that science-bafflingstar, without parallax, without calculableelements, which shoots a ray of beauty even into trivial and impure actions, if the least mark of independence appear? Theinquiry leads us to that source, at once the essence of genius, the essence ofvirtue, and the essence of life, which we call Spontaneity or Instinct. Wedenote this primary wisdom as Intuition, whilst all later teachings aretuitions. In that deep force, the last fact behind which analysis cannot go,all things find their common origin. For the sense of being which in calm hoursrises, we know not how, in the soul, is not diverse from things, from space,from light, from time, from man, but one with them and preceedethobviously from the same source whence their life and being also preceedeth. We at first share the life by which thingsexist and afterwards see them as appearances in nature and forget that we haveshared their cause. Here is the fountain of action and the fountain of thought.Here are the lungs of that inspiration which givethman wisdom, of that inspiration of man which cannot bedenied without impiety and atheism. We lie in the lap of immense intelligence,which makes us organs of its activity and receivers of its truth. When wediscern justice, when we discern truth, we do nothing of ourselves, but allow apassage to its beams. If we ask whence this comes, if we seek to pry into thesoul that causes — all metaphysics, all philosophy is at fault. Itspresence or absence is all we can affirm. Every man discerns between thevoluntary acts of his mind and his involuntary perceptions. And to hisinvoluntary perceptions he knows a perfect respect is due. He may err in theexpression of them, but he knows that these things are so, like day and night,not to be disputed. All my willful actions and acquisitions are but roving;— the most trivial reverie, the faintest native emotion, are domestic and divine. Thoughtless people contradict asreadily the statement of perceptions as of opinions, or rather much morereadily; for they do not distinguish betweenperception and notion. They fancy that I choose to see this or that thing. Butperception is not whimsical, but fatal. If I see a trait, my children will seeit after me, and in course of time all mankind, — although it may chancethat no one has seen it before me. For my perception of it is as much a fact asthe sun.

And nowat last the highest truth on this subject remains unsaid; probably cannot besaid; for all that we say is the far off rememberingof the intuition. That thought, by what I can now nearest approach to say it,is this. When good is near you, when you have life in yourself, — it isnot by any known or appointed way; you shall not discern the footprints ofanother; you shall not see the face of man; you shall not hear any name;— the way, the thought, the good, shall be wholly strange and new. Itshall exclude all other being. You take the way from man, not to man. Allpersons that ever existed are its fugitive ministers. There shall be no fear init. Fear and hope are alike beneath it. It asks nothing. There is somewhat loweven in hope. We are then in vision. There is nothing that can be calledgratitude, nor properly joy. The soul is raised over passion. It seeth identity and eternal causation. It is a perceivingthat Truth and Right are. Hence it becomes a Tranquillity out of the knowing that all things gowell. Vast spaces of nature; the Atlantic Ocean, the South Sea; vast intervalsof time, years, centuries, are of no account. This which I think and feelunderlay that former state of life and circumstances, as it does underlie mypresent and will always all circumstances, and what is called life and what iscalled death.

Life only avails, not the having lived. Powerceases in the instant of repose; it resides in the moment oftransition from a past to a new state, in the shooting of a gulf, in thedarting to an aim. This one fact the world hates, that the soul becomes; forthat forever degrades the past; turns all riches to poverty, all reputation toa shame; confounds the saint with the rogue;shoves Jesus and Judas equally aside. Why then do we prate of self-reliance? Inasmuch as the soul is present there willbe power not confident but agent. To talk of reliance is a poorexternal way of speaking. Speak rather of that which relies because it worksand is. Who has more soul than I masters me, though heshould not raise his finger. Round him I must revolve by the gravitation ofspirits. Who has less I rule with like facility. Wefancy it rhetoric when we speak of eminent virtue. We do not yet see thatvirtue is Height, and that a man or a company of men, plastic and permeable toprinciples, by the law of nature must overpower and ride all cities, nations,kings, rich men, poets, who are not.

This isthe ultimate fact which we so quickly reach on this,as on every topic, the resolution of all into the ever-blessed ONE. Virtue isthe governor, the creator, the reality. All thingsreal are so by so much virtue as they contain. Hardship, husbandry, hunting,whaling, war, eloquence, personal weight, are somewhat, and engage my respectas examples of the soul's presence and impure action. I see the same lawworking in nature for conservation and growth. The poise of a planet, thebended tree recovering itself from the strong wind, the vital resources ofevery animal and vegetable, are also demonstrations of the self-sufficing andtherefore self-relying soul. All history, from its brightest to its trivialpassage is the various record of this power.

Thus allconcentrates; let us not rove; let us sit at home with the cause. Let us stunand astonish the intruding rabble of men and books and institutions by a simpledeclaration of the divine fact. Bid them take the shoes from off their feet,for God is here within. Let our simplicity judge them. andour docility to our own law demonstrate the poverty of nature and fortunebeside our native riches.

But nowwe are a mob. Man does not stand in awe of men, nor is the soul admonished to stay at home, to put itself in communication with theinternal ocean, but it goes abroad to beg a cup of water of the urns of men. Wemust go alone. Isolation must precede true society. I like the silent churchbefore the service begins, better than any preaching. How faroff, how cool, how chaste the persons look, begirteach one with a precinct or sanctuary. So let us always sit. Why shouldwe assume the faults of our friend, or wife, or father, or child, because theysit around our hearth, or are said to have the same blood? All men have myblood and I have all men's. Not for that will I adopt their petulance or folly, even to the extent of being ashamed of it. Butyour isolation must not be mechanical, but spiritual, that is, must beelevation. At times the whole world seems to be in conspiracy to importune you with emphatic trifles. Friend, client, child, sickness,fear, want, charity, all knock at once at thy closet door and say, 'Come outunto us,' — Do not spoil thy soul; do not all descend; keep thy state;stay at home in thine own heaven; come not for amoment into their facts, into their hubbub of conflicting appearances but letin the light of thy law on their confusion. The power men possess to annoy me Igive them by weak curiosity. No man can come near me but through my act."What we love that we have, but by desire we bereave ourselves of the love."

If wecannot at once rise to the sanctities of obedience and faith, let us at least resist ourtemptations, let us enter into a state of war and wake Thor and Woden, courage andconstancy, in our Saxon breasts. This is to be done inour smooth times by speaking the truth. Check this lying hospitality and lyingaffection. Live no longer to the expectation of these deceived and deceivingpeople with whom we converse. Say to them, O father, O mother, O wife, Obrother, O friend, I have lived with you after appearances hitherto.Henceforward I am the truth's. Be it known unto youthat henceforward I obey no law less than the eternal law. I will have no covenants but proximities. I shall endeavor tonourish my parents, to support my family, to be the chaste husband of one wife,— but these relations I must fill after a new and unprecedented way. Iappeal from your customs. I must be myself. I cannot break myself any longerfor you, or you. If you can love me for what I am, we shall be the happier. Ifyou cannot, I will still seek to deserve that you should. I must be myself. Iwill not hide my tastes or aversions. I will so trust that what is deep isholy, that I will do strongly before the sun and moon whatever inly rejoices meand the heart appoints. If you are noble, I will love you; if you are not, Iwill not hurt you and myself by hypocritical attentions. If you are true, butnot in the same truth with me, cleave to your companions; I will seek myown. I do this not selfishly but humbly and truly. It is alike your interest,and mine, and all men's, however long we have dwelt in lies, to live in truth.Does this sound harsh today? You will soon love what isdictated by your nature as well as mine, and if we follow the truth itwill bring us out safe at last. — But so may you give these friends pain.Yes, but I cannot sell my liberty and my power, to save their sensibility. Besides, all persons have their moments of reason, whenthey look out into the region of absolute truth; then will they justify me anddo the same thing.

The populace think that your rejection of popular standards is arejection of all standard, and mere antinomianism; and the bold sensualist will use the name of philosophy to gild his crimes. But the law of consciousness abides. There are two confessionals, in one or the other of whichwe must be shriven. You may fulfill your roundof duties by clearing yourself in the direct, or in the reflex way. Considerwhether you have satisfied your relations to father, mother, cousin, neighbor,town, cat, and dog; whether any of these can upbraid you. But I may also neglect this reflex standard and absolve me to myself. I have my own stern claims and perfect circle.It denies the name of duty to many offices that are called duties. But if I candischarge its debts it enables me to dispense with the popular code. If any oneimagines that this law is lax, let him keep its commandment one day.

And trulyit demands something godlike in him who has cast off the common motives ofhumanity and has ventured to trust himself for a task-master.High be his heart, faithful his will, clear his sight, that he may in goodearnest be doctrine, society, law, to himself, that a simple purpose may be tohim as strong as iron necessity is to others.

If any man consider the present aspects of what is called bydistinction society, he will see the need of these ethics. The sinew and heartof man seem to be drawn out, and we are become timorous desponding whimperers.We are afraid of truth, afraid of fortune, afraid of death, and afraid of eachother. Our age yields no great and perfect persons. We want men and women whoshall renovate life and our social state, but we see that most natures are insolvent; cannot satisfy their own wants, have an ambition out of allproportion to their practical force, and so do lean and beg day and nightcontinually. Our housekeeping is mendicant, our arts, our occupation, our marriages, our religion wehave not chosen, but society has chosen for us. We are parlor soldiers. Therugged battle of fate, where strength is born, we shun.

If ouryoung men miscarry in their first enterprises they lose all heart. If the youngmerchant fails, men say he is ruined. If the finest genius studies at one ofour colleges and is not installed in an office within one year afterwards inthe cities or suburbs of Boston or New York, it seems to his friends and tohimself that he is right in being disheartened and in complaining the rest ofhis life. A sturdy lad from New Hampshire or Vermont, who in turn tries all theprofessions, who teams it, farms it, peddles, keeps a school, preaches, edits anewspaper, goes to Congress, buys a township, and so forth, in successiveyears, and always like a cat falls on his feet, is worth a hundred of thesecity dolls. He walks abreast with his days and feels no shame in not"studying a profession," for he does not postpone his life, but livesalready. He has not one chance, but a hundred chances. Let a stoic arise whoshall reveal the resources of man and tell men they are not leaning willows,but can and must detach themselves; that with the exercise of self-trust, newpowers shall appear; that a man is the word made flesh, born to shed healing tothe nations, that he should be ashamed of our compassion, and that the momenthe acts from himself, tossing the laws, the books, idolatries and customs outof the window, — we pity him no more but thank and revere him; — and that teacher shall restore the life of manto splendor and make his name dear to all History.

It is easyto see that a greater self-reliance — a new respect for the divinity inman — must work a revolution in all the offices and relations of men; intheir religion; in their education; in their pursuits; their modes of living;their association; in their property; in their speculative views.

I. Inwhat prayers do men allow themselves! That which they call a holy office is notso much as brave and manly. Prayer looks abroad and asks for some foreignaddition to come through some foreign virtue, and loses itself in endless mazesof natural and supernatural, and mediatorial andmiraculous. Prayer that craves a particular commodity — anything lessthan all good, is vicious. Prayer is the contemplation of the facts of lifefrom the highest point of view. It is the soliloquy of a beholding and jubilantsoul. It is the spirit of God pronouncing his works good. But prayer as a meansto effect a private end is theft and meanness. It supposes duality and notunity in nature and consciousness. As soon as the man is at one with God, hewill not beg. He will then see prayer in all action. The prayer of the farmerkneeling in his field to weed it, the prayer of the rower kneeling with thestroke of his oar, are true prayers heard throughout nature, though for cheapends. Caratach, in Fletcher's Bonduca, when admonished to inquire the mind of the god Audate,replies,

"Hishidden meaning lies in our endeavors; Our valors are our best gods."

Anothersort of false prayers are our regrets. Discontent is the want of self-reliance;it is infirmity of will. Regret calamities if you can thereby help thesufferer; if not, attend your own work and already the evil begins to berepaired. Our sympathy is just as base. We come to them who weep foolishly andsit down and cry for company, instead of imparting to them truth and health inrough electric shocks, putting them once more in communication with the soul.The secret of fortune is joy in our hands. Welcome evermore to gods and men isthe self-helping man. For him all doors are flung wide. Him all tongues greet,all honors crown all, all eyes follow with desire. Ourlove goes out to him and embraces him because he did not need it. Wesolicitously and apologetically caress and celebrate him because he held on hisway and scorned our disapprobation. The gods love him because men hated him."To the persevering mortal," said Zoroaster, "the blessed Immortals are swift."

As men'sprayers are a disease of the will, so are their creeds a disease of theintellect. They say with those foolish Israelites, 'Let not God speak to us,lest we die. Speak thou, speak any man with us, and we will obey.' Everywhere Iam bereaved of meeting God in mybrother, because he has shut his own temple doors and recites fables merely ofhis brother's, or his brother's brother's God. Everynew mind is a new classification. If it prove a mind of uncommon activity andpower, a Locke, a Lavoisier, a Hutton, a Bentham, a Spurzheim,it imposes its classification on other men, and lo! anew system. In proportion always to the depth of the thought, and so to thenumber of objects it touches and brings within reach of the pupil, in his complacency. But chiefly in this apparent in creeds and churches, whichare also classifications of some powerful mind acting on the great elementalthought of Duty and man's relation to the Highest. Such is Calvinism,Quakerism, Swedenborgianism.The pupil takes the same delight in subordinating everything to the newterminology that a girl does who has just learned botany in seeing a new earthand new seasons thereby. It will happen for a time that the pupil will feel areal debt to the teacher — will find his intellectual power has grown bythe study of his writings. This will continue until he has exhausted his master'smind. But in all unbalanced minds the classification is idolized, passes forthe end and not for a speedily exhaustible means, so that the walls of thesystem blend to their eye in the remote horizon with the walls of the universe;the luminaries of heaven seem to them hung on the arch their master built. Theycannot imagine how you aliens have any right to see — how you can see;'It must be somehow that you stole the light from us.' They do not yet perceivethat light, unsystematic, indomitable, will break into any cabin, even intotheirs. Let them chirp awhile and call it their own. If they are honest and dowell, presently their neat new pinfold will be too strait and low, will crack, will lean, will rotand vanish, and the immortal light, all young and joyful, million-orbed,million-colored, will beam over the universe as on the first morning.

2. It isfor want of self-culture that the idol of Traveling, the idol of Italy, ofEngland, of Egypt, remains for all educated Americans. They who made England,Italy, or Greece venerable in the imagination, did sonot by rambling round creation as a moth round a lamp, but by sticking fastwhere they were, like an axis of the earth. In manly hours we feel that duty isour place and that the merry men of circumstance should follow as they may. Thesoul is no traveler: the wise man stays at home with the soul, and when hisnecessities, his duties, on any occasion call him from his house, or intoforeign lands, he is at home still and is not gadding abroad from himself, and shall make men sensible by theexpression of his countenance that he goes, the missionary of wisdom andvirtue, and visits cities and men like a sovereign and not like an interloper or a valet.

I have nochurlish objection to the circumnavigation of the globe for thepurposes of art, of study, and benevolence, so that the man is firstdomesticated, or does not go abroad with the hope of finding somewhat greaterthan he knows. He who travels to be amused or to get somewhatwhich he does not carry, travels away from himself, and grows old evenin youth among old things. In Thebes, in Palmyra, his will and mind have becomeold and dilapidated as they. He carries ruins to ruins.

Travelingis a fool's paradise. We owe to our first journeys the discovery that place is nothing. At home I dream that at Naples, at Rome, I can beintoxicated with beauty and lose my sadness. I pack my trunk, embrace myfriends, embark on the sea and at last wake up in Naples, and there beside me is the stern Fact, and sad self, unrelenting, identical,that I fled from. I seek the Vatican and the palaces. I affect to beintoxicated with sights and suggestions, but I am not intoxicated. My giantgoes with me wherever I go.

3. Butthe rage of traveling is itself only a symptom of a deeper unsoundnessaffecting the whole intellectual action. The intellect is vagabond, and the universal system of education fosters restlessness.Our minds travel when our bodies are forced to stay at home. We imitate; andwhat is imitation but the traveling of the mind? Our houses are built withforeign taste; our shelves are garnished with foreign ornaments; our opinions,our tastes, our whole minds, lean, and follow the Past and the Distant, as theeyes of a maid follow her mistress. The soul created the arts wherever theyhave flourished. It was in his own mind that the artist sought the model. Itwas an application of his own thought to the thing tobe done and the conditions to be observed. And why need we copy the Doric orthe Gothic model? Beauty, convenience, grandeur of thought and quaintexpression are as near to us as to any, and if the American artist will studywith hope and love the precise thing to be done by him, considering theclimate, the soil, the length of the day, the wants of the people, the habitand form of the government, he will create a house in which all these will findthemselves fitted, and taste and sentiment will be satisfied also.

Insist onyourself; never imitate. Your own gift you can presentevery moment with the cumulative force of a whole life's cultivation; but ofthe adopted talent of another you have only an extemporaneous half possession.That which each can do best, none but his Maker can teach him. No man yet knowswhat it is, nor can, till that person has exhibited it. Where is the master whocould have taught Shakespeare? Where is the master who could have instructedFranklin, or Washington, or Bacon, or Newton? Every great man is an unique. The Scipionism of Scipio is precisely that part he could not borrow. If anybody willtell me whom the great man imitates in the original crisis when he performs agreat act, I will tell him who else than himself can teach him. Shakespearewill never be made by the study of Shakespeare. Do that which is assigned theeand thou canst not hope too much or dare too much. There is at this moment,there is for me an utterance bare and grand as that of the colossal chisel ofPhidias, or trowel of the Egyptians, or the pen of Moses or Dante, butdifferent from all of these. Not possibly will the soul, all rich, all eloquent,with thousands cloven tongue, deign to repeat itself; but if I can hear what these patriarchssay, surely I can reply to them in the same pitch of voice; for the ear and thetongue are two organs of one nature.
